PLplot è relativamente piccolo, portabile, distribuibile liberamente ed è abbastanza ricco per soddisfare la maggior parte degli utenti. Ha una vasta gamma di tipologie di disegno che includono: linee (lineari e logaritmiche), contorni, 3D, riempimenti e quasi 1.000 caratteri (tra cui quelli greci e matematici) nel suo insieme di font esteso. 
 
Il pacchetto è progettato per facilitare l'ottenimento veloce di un output grafico; sono necessarie, normalmente, soltanto una manciata di chiamate a funzioni. Virtualmente tutti gli aspetti di disegno sono configurabili, per un uso più specialistico.

Molti studenti di facoltà scientifiche ed ingegneristiche presto a tardi si troveranno a dover lavorare con MatLab.
MatLab per chi non lo sapese è un ambiente per il calcolo numerico e l’analisi stattistica che comprende anche l’omonimo linguaggio di programazzione creato dalla MathWorks.

Consente di manipolare matrici, visualizzare funzioni e dati, implementare algoritmi, creare interfacce utente, e interfacciarsi con altri programmi. Nonostante sia specializzato nel calcolo numerico, un toolbox opzionale interfaccia MATLAB con il motore di calcolo simbolico di Maple. E’ usato nell’industria, nelle università ed è multipiattaforma.
