http://weblog.etherized.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/disk2.jpg

About

REOBack (pronounced "ray-o-back") is a backup solution designed for Linux users and system administrators. It is designed to be simple to set up, and easy to use. It is great as a quick solution for those who procrastinate about backups. It supports automatic full/incremental backups of files you define, remote backups via NFS or FTP, as well as auto deletion of old backups. See the latest README for more information.

REOBack is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by he Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. All we ask is that you keep copyright notices and headers intact, and give credit to the original developers and contributors.

REOBack is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the GNU Library General Public License for more details.

Requirements

REOBack was written and tested using RedHat Linux 7.1/7.2. Since it was written in Perl and uses standard UNIX tar and gzip, I'm positive that it will work on just about any flavor of UNIX. But just in case, here's the official requirements:

  • Linux or any flavor of UNIX (provided, the following are available:)
  • Perl v.5.6.1
  • Net::FTP Perl Module (optional, needed only if doing FTP backups)
  • Tar
  • Gzip

REOBack has been reported to run on RedHat Linux, Free BSD, Mac OS X, and AIX. If you install REOBack on any OS other than what's listed above, and it works, let us know.

Changes

Changes in version 1.0 Release 3:

  • Fixed problem when backing up "/" (root dir).
  • Fixed "rename" code to use "move" to work across filesystems.
  • Fixed the directory permissions problem when restoring backups.
  • Changed tar parameters from "cpfz" to "-cpzf" for compatability with
other flavors of UNIX i.e. AIX.
  • Check if Net::FTP is installed when doing an FTP remote backup,
    * Fixes bug 463642
  • Automatically create directories from settings.conf if they do not
exist. Parent directories are created if necessary.
    * First half of fix for bug 482380
  • Better error checking and reporting.
    * Second half of fix for bug 482380
  • Removes large (>2GB) archives, even if Perl does not have large file
support. This relies on the tar command having large file support
enabled, but both the file system and the tar command have to have
large file support to create a file larger than 2GB.
    * Fixes bug 521843
  • Skip removing comments for FTP passwords. REOBack will now treat
everything after 'ftppasswd = ' as a password, except for leading and
trailing whitespace. For example, for the line
    'ftppasswd = my##password ', REOBack will extract 'my##password'
    as the FTP password.
    * Fixes bug 506178
  • Correctly handle the case where there are no files to skip.
  • Fixed a bug with checking for the last modification time for symbolic
    links.
  • Perl regular expressions (wild cards) for Skip: directives. For
example, to skip all files and directories in your home directory that
start with a dot, you can use:

    Skip: /home/myself/\..*

Wondering what '\..*' does? The leading backslash, '/', tells REOBack
(actually Perl) to treat the next dot, '.', as a literal dot. The
third dot tells Perl to match any character, and the asterisk, '*',
tells Perl to perform the match zero or more times.
  • Suppress "Removing leading `/'" message from tar.
  • Prints correct backup type.
  • Prints version each time it is run.
  • Creates fewer temporary files.
  • General code streamlining and cleanup.

The complete changelog can be found here.

PlayOnLinux, per installare facilmente i giochi

Home

Tanto per farvi un esempio l'ultimo script presentato è stato quello di Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time.

PlayOnLinux

PlayOnLinux (POL) is a python-based frontend (with bash install scripts) to install windows programs in Wine. Originally, the program's purpose was to let new linux users install their favorite windows games with ease. Since then, the program has evolved to include office-based windows programs (such as MSOffice 2003), and DOS based programs (using DosBox).

Each supported program is shown in a menu, and are either scripted (using bash) by the official developers, or contributed by community members.

There are interesting options in PlayOnLinux, and these include the following:

  1. POL allows each installed program to be installed within it's own wineprefix and directory (similar to bottles in CrossOver).
  2. It does simulated reboots for certain programs.
  3. It has an option of installing Directx for a certain installed game.
  4. It can run graphics tests/benchmarks for your video card (using Glxgears, Glxmux, etc.).
  5. POL allows you to update install scripts from a central repository - this allows the supported games/programs to grow without you ever having to reinstall the program.
  6. You can assign specific wine versions to run your installed windows program from. If that Wine version is not available on your system, you can choose what version you want and POL downloads and installs the specifc wine version for you.
  7. You can also assign the git version of Wine for the installed program. POL has a menu to automatically download the newest sources of Wine from the git repositories and compile them for you automatically.
  8. POL can automatically put the installed windows programs shortcuts into the Desktop and/or KDE or Gnome PlayOnLinux menu.

End Result of Installing MSOffice 2003 on POL

The PlayOnLinux site (http://www.playonlinux.com/en) includes packages for Debian, Mandriva 2008, Fedora 7 and tar.gz packages for your convenience.

PlayOnLinux has the following requirements for it to run (as of 2.0.4):
  1. Wine
  2. Bash
  3. Python > 2.4
  4. Wxwindows bindings for Python > 2.6
  5. Lynx
  6. xterm
  7. unzip
To sum it up, POL is a promising frontend installer for Windows and Dos programs. Although there are some scripts that are outdated (POL uses Wine 0.9.37 to run MSOffice 2003, and the IE6.

Ubuntu Mockup Hardy Heron

Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 3

Introduction

The Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Hardy Heron Alpha 3 is the third alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features.

Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in April 2008.

In General

These features are showcased for your attention. Please test them and report any bugs you find. If you want to see what the developers have cooking for the next alpha release take a look through the hardy blueprint page https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy

Upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10

To upgrade from Ubuntu 7.10, run "update-manager -d" using the update-manager package from Gutsy.

Xorg 7.3

The latest Xorg is available in Hardy, Xorg 7.3, with an emphasis on better autoconfiguration with a minimal configuration file.

Linux kernel 2.6.24

Alpha 3 includes the 2.6.24-3.5 (2.6.24-rc6-based) kernel. This brings in significant enhancements and fixes that have been merged in the last few months into the mainline kernel. Among these is the introduction of dynticks support for amd64, bringing the same power savings already available on 32-bit systems to 64-bit laptops and desktops.

PulseAudio

Alpha 3 includes PulseAudio enabled by default. Some non-GNOME applications still need to be changed to output to pulse/esd by default and the volume control tools are still not integrated. https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/cleanup-audio-jumble

PolicyKit

With Alpha 3, PolicyKit integration is gaining visibility in the administrative user interfaces. PolicyKit makes it possible to run administrative applications as a normal user, and have them get a particular set of extra privileges for certain operations, which allows fine grained control over user permissions and enhances usability, as well as eliminating the security implications of running the whole application as root.

alpha3_polkit5.png

For details of PolicyKit integration in Hardy, refer to the policykit-integration blueprint.

Firefox 3 Beta 2

The latest Firefox 3 beta comes with Alpha 3, bringing much better system integration including theming that mirrors the system such as icons and colours as well as having GTK2 form buttons and open dialog.

The three pages of the wizard:
