Un window manager è un programma che gestisce l'aspetto e la posizione di una finestra nel X Window System, un sistema grafico usato principalmente sotto Unix.

Chi scopre il mondo Linux rimane favorevolmente colpito dal grande numero di window manager a disposizione dell'ambiente grafico X-Windows. E così si cerca di provarli tutti, finendo per avere sull'hard disk decine di mega occupati.

Vediamo quello che si adatta meglio alle nostre esigenze.

In questa settima puntata dai popolari Uim e VMware all'ultima versione di Ubuntu Studio passando per altri windows manager un po' meno conosciuti ma non meno validi come Ubiquity, Video panorama, VideoCut ed altri comandi e utility.

In pratica, quella sequenza di immagini e parole che si susseguono all’atto dell’installazione tessendo le lodi del nostro nuovo sistema operativo.

L’idea del creatore e manutentore di Ubiquity, Dylan Mccal, è quella di creare uno slideshow diverso per ogni versione di Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (U/X/Kubuntu, nonchè la versione per netbook).

E’ stato proprio lui a rendere disponibili online le immagini del nuovo Ubiquity per Ubuntu (già in precedenza costantemente rendeva disponibili quelle vecchie)

Ubuntu Studio è una distribuzione Linux basata su Ubuntu, riconosciuta e supportata da Canonical Ltd rivolta alla produzione multimediale amatoriale e professionale.

Invece di essere distribuita su Live CD, come di solito accade per tutte le distribuzioni derivate da Ubuntu, a causa del suo ricco pacchetto di programmi è scaricabile solo in versione Install DVD, di conseguenza non può essere provata prima dell'installazione. Anche la GUI presenta delle particolarità: infatti al posto del consueto tema Human utilizza un tema esclusivo.


Ubuntu Studio è stata pensata per mettere da subito a disposizione degli utenti i migliori software per la produzione multimediale, dall'ottimo Blender per l'elaborazione di grafica tridimensionale, Kino e Stopmotion per la postproduzione cinematografica, e altri programmi di elaborazione audio come Ardour.
